Why This Happens
Garage door opener systems rely on a pair of small sensors mounted a few inches off the ground on either side of the door track. One sensor sends an infrared beam and the other receives it, and if that beam is broken, the opener assumes something — or someone — is in the doorway and refuses to close.
Direct or reflected sunlight can overpower the receiving sensor the same way a bright flashlight can wash out a camera lens. When this happens, the door may refuse to close at all, close partway and reverse, or behave inconsistently depending on the time of day and season.
Common Sunlight-Related Causes
During certain months, the sun sits low enough in the sky to shine directly through the garage opening and straight onto the receiving sensor's lens.
Light bouncing off a car windshield, driveway, or nearby window can hit the sensor even when the sun itself isn't pointed directly at the door.
A layer of dust, pollen, or moisture on the sensor lens can scatter sunlight in ways that confuse the receiver even more than a clean lens would.
Sensors that are slightly tilted or knocked out of alignment are more likely to pick up stray light instead of only the intended beam from the opposite sensor.

Adding a small hood, cupped hand test, or simple shield over each sensor can block direct sun while still letting the actual beam pass between them.
Clean The Lenses
Wipe both sensor lenses with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust or film that could be scattering light and interfering with the beam.
